My old mechanic Ed had so many project cars he was working on, and I asked him how he kept them going.
His answer was pretty profound but really simple:
“It can seem so hard when you have a whole car to put back together - but really, it’s just one more bolt. That’s your next step. Get one more bolt done before you head to bed. One more part stripped down, one more panel painted. Just focus on the one next thing.”
It’s seriously changed how I do restos and even maintenance stuff, as it allows you to focus and zoom in on what you’re doing, and not get overwhelmed by the garage full of parts and half disassembled cars.
Sometimes working on cars can be so good for your mental health, but sometimes it can be a burden. If you're feeling the mental load and the stress, we hear you. Just take it one... more... bolt... at a time.
